Depression

Depression is more than just feeling low—it’s a deep, persistent struggle that can make even the simplest daily tasks feel overwhelming. While everyone experiences sadness from time to time, depression is different. It lingers, drains your energy, and interferes with your ability to enjoy life. At its most severe, known as clinical depression, it can feel impossible to escape. Research from the NIMH suggests that up to 20% of people will experience depression at some point in their lives.

Understanding Depression

Feeling down occasionally is a natural part of life. But when sadness turns into ongoing hopelessness, lack of motivation, or emotional numbness, it may be a sign of depression. Symptoms can include persistent low mood, loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, exhaustion, poor concentration, changes in appetite or weight, disrupted sleep, and even thoughts of hopelessness.

Depression doesn’t discriminate—it can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or culture. While more women seek treatment, this may be because they feel more comfortable discussing their struggles, whereas men often suffer in silence.

Many factors can contribute to depression, including grief, relationship struggles, financial difficulties, chronic stress, or traumatic life experiences. It is often accompanied by anxiety, panic attacks, social withdrawal, and overwhelming feelings of fear or dread. Some theories suggest a chemical imbalance in the brain may play a role, but the rapid rise in depression over the last half-century suggests that external factors and thought patterns also play a significant role.
